What types of e-book publishing formats are there?

E-books can be published in a variety of formats. Here are few of the most common e-book publishing formats.

.pdf – This format is the most convenient format among all the other formats and it stands for “Portable Document Format” The PDF format was created by Adobe Systems and is highly compatible with PCs, Macs and Linux systems. PDF files can also be viewed directly on the Web with Adobe Reader.

.epub – The EPub format, based on XHTML and XML, is an open standard for e-books. Although less convenient than pdf, this format is a popular choice for a wide range of devices, and is highly compatible with Barnes and Noble’s nook, Kobo, iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, and Google Play Books.

.mobi/ .prc – an open e-book standard that uses XHTML, JavaScript, and Frames can be viewed with many PDAs and smartphones. This format is for Mobipocket e-books and is widely popular in Kindle at Amazon.com
